2013 Frankfurt Motor Show

Saleen's New Supercar is Coming in 2 Years

Earlier this summer we reported that because Steve Saleen retook control of his high-performance car company, not only would there be plenty more tuned Mustangs, but also a new supercar at some point down the road. Nothing was fully confirmed but it was clear that Saleen very much wanted that car to happen. The only question was when. Today, however, we seem to have our answer. In an interview with Motor Trend, Steve Saleen confirmed that his new supercar will hit the market in two years’ time.

Bugatti Quashes Super Veyron Rumors

Recent reports of a 1,500 horsepower, 280 mph, “super” Bugatti Veyron have finally been put to rest by the carmaker’s top dog. Bugatti President Dr. Wolfgang Schreiber has told Autoblog it will never happen. To date, Bugatti has delivered around 390 of its promised 450-unit run, which includes various Veyron special and limited editions. The remaining 60 or so models will come with the 1,200-hp variant of the W16 quad-turbo engine with no further engine enhancements made. Production of the current Veyron is expected to end in 2015.

2013 McLaren MP4-VX by Vorsteiner

Earlier this this Vorsteiner announced the McLaren-V Concept which seemed to preview the new MP4-VX tuning kit that was just announced. The kit was unveiled last night at the Vorsteiner headquarters in Garden Grove, California. Of course that the new McLaren MP4-12C is a great car and we love the way it looks like, but it seems that the folks over Vorsteiner wanted to tweak its appearance just a little. And tweak it they certainly did! Too bad there’s no upgrades under the hood, but the standard 3.8-liter twin-turbo V-8 engine with its 616 horsepower 443 pound-feet of torque that launched the supercar to 60 mph in as little as 3 seconds seems good enough. Vorsteiner’s new kit was built using the latest dry carbon fiber pre-preg autoclave technology and it transforms the MP4-12C into an even more aggressive-looking supercar. On top of that, the tuner even added a set of wheels top help round out the look.

Porsche 911 GT3 RS is Coming Next Year

Although the Porsche 911 GT3 just had its big debut, details are already beginning to emerge regarding the even more extreme GT3 RS. Due to arrive in US dealerships sometime later next year, the 911 GT3 RS will also ditch the traditional six-speed manual in favor of the PDK dual-clutch gearbox. More than likely, we can also expect to see it feature a carbon-fiber roof panel, as opposed to the base 911’s modular roof, along with plenty of other weight-reducing elements. - It’ll also have the wide body treatment from the Carrera 4 and will be even wider than the GT3 thanks to using body panels from the 911 Turbo. An adjustable rear wing and stiffer, more race-focused suspension tuning are expected as well. Still unclear, however, is which engine Porsche will go with. The current rumor is a tweaked version of the GT3’s 3.8-liter flat-six, but a 4.0-liter unit is also not being ruled out. Output, despite which engine is chosen, will exceed 475 horsepower. -

This is the Lamborghini Gallardo Squadra Corse

Just yesterday some spy images appeared showing a mystery Lamborghini Gallardo out testing. Today, however, that mystery has been solved. Introducing the new all-wheel drive LP 570-4 Squadra Corsa, which will have its official live debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. It’s nearly mechanically identical to the LP 570-4 Super Trofeo race car, only that it’s fully street legal. It may just be the greatest Gallardo ever built. It shares many key components with the Gallardo Superleggera, such as the 5.2-liter V10 that pumps out 570 horsepower, that big carbon fiber rear wing and the removable engine hood. The sole (read: no six-speed manual will be available) transmission is the familiar e-gear six-speed auto with paddle shifters. All told, the Squadra Corse weighs 2,954 lbs., which is 154 lbs. less than the standard LP560-4. Other features include carbon-ceramic brakes, carbon fiber bucket seats with Alcantara center inserts, and Alcantara covering the underside of the dashboard. Overall, the car has a minimalist interior feel.

2014 Aston Martin DB9 Spyder Zagato Centennial

When it comes to special one-off Aston Martins, the British automaker usually taps the service of one design house: Zagato. We’ve seen over the years what a collaboration between the two companies can produce. Now that Aston Martin is in the middle of celebrating its 100th anniversary, it’s not surprising that Zagato has come back to build a pair of special one-off models to commemorate the occasion. One of these models is called the DB9 Spyder Zagato Centennial, a special model based on the 2013 DB9 Volante convertible. Looking completely different from what we’ve come to know about the modern DB9 Volante, the DB9 Spyder Zagato Centennial does carry plenty of design inspiration, most notably from the 1994-2003 DB7 Zagato. Equally fascinating is the way Aston Martin and Zagato went to giving the one-off model unique tastes of both companies. From Zagato’s double-bubble roof to Aston Martin’s unmistakable, albeit larger, grille and fender vents, the DB9 Spyder Zagato Centennial really does represent the best of both worlds. One thing that did throw us for a little loop is the design of the round headlights, which does harken us back to the V8 Zagato of the 80’s but comes as a little out of place when built into the sharper and more streamlined look of the current DB9 Volante. In any case, the DB9 Spyder Zagato Centennial is still a treat to look at and noted American collector and Aston Martin enthusiast Peter Read is a pretty lucky man to being the recipient of this one-off ride.

2013 Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse "Jean-Pierre Wimille" Edition

In every company in the world, there are people that have helped elevate it to supremacy and some companies see it fit to celebrate its heroes. Bugatti is doing just that by preparing a series of six individual Veyron models, specially developed to pay tribute to the people that "have played a crucial role in its history and which have helped creating its mystique." The first from this special series is called Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse "Jean-Pierre Wimille" Edition and, as its name suggests, it pays tribute to Jean-Pierre Wimille — a racecar driver that brought two Le Mans victories to Bugatti. This special edition was inspired by the Bugatti 57G Tank that won the Le Mans in 1937. It comes with a two-tone paint job that features blue clear-coated carbon fiber and a light Wimille Bleu. Under the hood, this Bugatti Veyron stays bone stock, leaving it at the amazing 8-liter W-16 engine that delivers 1,200 horsepower and 1,100 pound-feet of torque. The model will be making its world debut at the US The Quail/Pebble Beach set to take place from 16 to 18 August.

2013 McLaren 12C B&W Edition

McLaren recently trooped to Hong Kong to introduce its P1 supercar to arguably one of the most exotic-friendly markets in the world. But in the course of telling the gathered crowd that the P1 would cost HKD$8.9 million (excluding First Registration Tax) - that’s about $1.14 million based on current exchange rates, by the way - the British automaker also brought a special one-off MP4-12C that came straight out of its McLaren Special Operations program. Similar to past one-off creations out of the customization program, this 12C B&W Edition, was treated to a bevy of modifications, highlighted by a two-tone exterior with a unique white color and gloss black accents. The latter, in fact, was used on the roof, the front splitter, the mirror casings and the wheels. Additionally, the 12C B&W Edition also had its gloss white paint on both the air vents and the instrument cluster bezel, providing a consistency of color and shade that belies its appearance as a true one-off supercar. And in case there are any questions regarding how much the 12C B&W Edition is going to cost, McLaren has officially priced it at a tidy HKD$4.68 million, which is just a shade above $600,000 based on current exchange rates. There’s something to be said for a supercar, even a one-off make like this, to carry such a price tag. But given the exotic climate in a place like Hong Kong, we doubt this piece of handiwork from the McLaren Special Operations program would sit long in the McLaren dealership.

2013 SIN R1

Not a lot of people understand the hard work it takes to build a car, let alone one that develops 500 horsepower and hits 200 mph at the drop of a hat. But the people over at Sin Cars understand what it takes to hit these levels of performance. That’s why the company has succeeded in building a special supercar called the R1. For what it’s worth, the R1 supercar looks like one and performs like one too. It doesn’t boast of the most ostentatious design you’ll see, but it’s got the styling credentials to be looked at as a race-ready machine capable of throwing down with the best of them. But that’s what makes the R1 impressive: it was made by young designers with plenty of experience in motorsport racing. The combined knowledge and understanding of the industry made this supercar what it is now and that’s a credit to the folks who worked hours on end to see this project through. Again, the R1 isn’t your typical Ferrari or Lamborghini, but it sure does have that supercar soul and at the end of the day, that’s the ultimate stamp of approval.

2013 Ferrari 458 Italia Spyder by Autodynamica

A little more than two months after gifting us with a sick program for the McLaren MP4-12C, the folks over at Autodynamica are back at it again. This time it’s delivering a new treat for a fellow exotic: the Ferrari 458 Italia Spyder. Featuring a comprehensive program that includes a new aero kit from Vorsteiner to go with performance and suspension updates, Autodynamica really went to the well with its aftermarket work on the 458 Italia Spyder. Obviously, the most distinctive part of the project is the Vorsteiner kit, which we’ll get into later. What really got our juices flowing, though, are the performance and suspension upgrades the aftermarket company did to the 458 Italia Spyder. First, it installed new Akrapovic high flow cats, a titanium valved exhaust, carbon-fiber exhaust tips and KW suspension springs. Also added in were 20- and 21-inch HRE S101 wheels on the on the front and rear, respectively, wrapped in Pirelli P Zero tires. That’s not all, though. Autodynamica also gave the Ferrari supercar a new Evomsit Performance software upgrade, resulting in improved power figures to the tune of 609 horsepower, an improvement of almost 40 ponies from the standard model. Torque numbers weren’t announced, but we expect it to be somewhere in the neighborhood of 460 pound-feet to go with an estimate 0-to-60 mph time of 3.2 seconds and a top speed of 204 mph.

2014 VUHL 05

You might not be familiar with VUHL (Vehicles of Ultra- lightweight and High-performance), but in just a few days, at the 2013 Goodwood Festival of Speed, you’re going to get acquainted with it real quickly. The "highly specialist" automaker is the brainchild of brothers Iker and Guillermo Echeverria, whose Mexican/American design agency, Etxe, was responsible for designing the 05, a road-legal lightweight supercar that no one has ever seen, at least until now. The model was designed for the road and track, and comes as a response to cars like BAC Mono, Ariel Atom and KTM X-Bow. According to Iker, VUHL wanted to develop a "highly intuitive machine that was both stirringly fast and immense fun to drive – a car we ourselves would want to own." And the result is the new 05.

2013 Lamborghini Aventador LP900 SV Spezial Version "2/10"

Back in December of last year, German tuner DMC unveiled one of the nastiest tuning packages made for the Lamborghini Aventador. It was called the LP900 Spezial Version and in so many words, it was just nuts. Mind-blowing nuts. At that time, DMC promised to build only 10 kits of the LP900 SV and limited it to clients who already owned a regular Molto Veloce kit for the Aventador. And even then, the owners were still subjected to a thorough screening process from DMC with only 10 getting the opportunity to own the unique "aftermarket of an aftermarket program". So as you can see, the LP900 SV is about as rare as a pink unicorn with winged hooves. That’s why it’s big news when DMC unveils these models, which they actually did with one of them. This sparkling piece of aftermarket awesomeness is the third kit of the lot, yet appropriately numbered 2/10 to account for the "0" prototype. It still carries all of the aftermarket wonders DMC installed to it, highlighted by the massive engine upgrade that saw the output from its 6.5-liter V-12 engine shoot up from 700 horsepower all the way up to 900 horsepower. DMC didn’t reveal the program’s performance numbers, but there’s no reason to believe that this rocket can hit close to 230 when it has its legs all stretched out.

2013 McLaren MP4-12C Volcano Red by Ultimate Auto

There’s not enough superlative to describe the McLaren MP4-12C Spyder. Every so often, even we get a little lost for words when talking about a supercar of the 12C Spyder’s stature. That, in a nutshell, has also been the go-to expression with Florida-based tuner Ultimate Auto. It’s produced some really wicked programs in the past couple of months and the one for the 12C Spyder is about as impressive as it gets. The really cool thing about what Ultimate Auto did to the 12C Spyder is that it gave the supercar some custom enhancements you normally wouldn’t see other tuners even bother getting into. Not only does it give the supercar a unique look, but it also makes it an undeniable stunner, something Ultimate Auto has prided itself on recently. And lest we forget, this British rocket also comes with a 3.8-liter V-8 twin-turbo engine combined with a 7 Speed SSG dual-clutch transmission, allowing it to produce 616 horsepower and sprint from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.1 seconds with a top speed of 204 mph.

2015 SCG 003

If the name SCG doesn’t ring a bell for you its only because up until now you were more familiar with the "James Glickenhaus." Yes, the developer of the famous Ferrari P4/5 by Pininfarina and the race version, the P4/5 Competizione (pictured here). SCG - or Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus - is his personal brand that will hit the market with two new models: a road car called 003 and the race version, 003C. Why 003? No big explanation here: simply because it will be the third model developed by Glickenhaus. In a recent post Glickenhaus, said that the company already started to work on the engineering, aero and design, but unfortunately you shouldn’t expect to see the new model until 2015. Talking about the new model, Glickenhaus said it will feature "a very sexy shape" and will be about the same size as the Ferrari Dino. It will also be lighter, smaller, simpler and very beautiful and its design language will feature "three wings integrated into the form as a Porsche 959’s rear wing is." While he offered no other details on the upcoming 003, previous reports suggested the model will be powered by a twin-turbocharged V-6 engine with an output of about 500 horsepower.

We Withhold Judgment On The Minerva J.M. Brabazon

Apparently taking a cue from Spyker, a Belgian boutique supercar maker, called Minerva, has decided to resurrect the name of a long-forgotten prewar luxury marque. The first model from the reborn company is known as the J.M. Brabazon, a plug-in hybrid supercar named after a British racing driver. The gasoline engine is a twin-turbo V12 mated to a six-speed F1 gearbox, while the electric portion of the drivetrain consists of two motors which drive the front wheels - The top speed is said to be 248 mph, and the car has five different driving modes: Economy, Normal, Sport, Race and Safe Mode. This all sounds like it could be promising, although we’re always a bit skeptical when a new company announces a new and magnificent supercar. Assuming the hybrid setup is something like the one used by Audi in its Le Mans prototype cars, there is definite potential here. But a company which leaves the initials of the person they’re naming their car after in the model name is clearly a company which makes odd decisions. In all, we’ll wait to judge it until we’ve seen

Bentley To Roll Out Continental GT3 Race Car At Goodwood

When it was first shown in concept form at the Paris Motor Show last year, the Bentley Continental GT3 caused quite a stir. But this should prove to be nothing compared to its first on-track appearance, scheduled for later this year. First we have to see the final “production” version of the car, and Bentley will be treating us to a view of this at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, which kicks off next weekend. The unveiling comes ten years and a month after Bentley’s 1-2 finish at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2003, the sixth overall win for the storied marque. Though the GT3 won’t quite be in the same class as the Speed 8 prototypes, and we’re not expecting to see any additional overall Le Mans wins out of the new cars, a return of Bentley to motorsports is still definitely exciting

The Dodge Viper

It was back in 1991 when Dodge first showed the world the Viper RT/10, debuting it as the pace car for that year’s Indianapolis 500. The V10-powered supercar’s styling was unlike anything else on the market at the time and its performance specs were equally impressive. Compared to other new supercars, the Viper remains a bit of a hard case in terms of how it drives. It also has no fancy gearbox, just a good old six-speed manual. The latest generation, the SRT Viper, remains true to its roots and for this, we’re eternally grateful to its creators. -

New Subaru WRX STI Trim is a Solid Sendoff

With an all-new WRX due to arrive in the coming months, Subaru is giving the current model a nice farewell - in Japan at least. What you’re looking at will more than likely be the last version of the current generation WRX before its replacement arrives later this year or early next. The 2013 WRX STI tS TYPE RA features a number of upgrades such as new steering ratio, Brembo brakes on all four wheels and six-piston calipers up front, new suspension struts, coil springs and 18" wheels. The exterior can be had in the unique Tangerine Orange Pearl paint but additional colors are also offered. The side mirrors, front lip spoiler and wheels are available only in black.

2013 Minerva JM Brabazon

Minerva Automobiles - also known as the Belgian Rolls-Royce of early last century - is working on a major comeback and apparently the first supercar to come from the newly reborn company is the J.M. Brabazon. The new J.M. Brabazon was named after Lord of Tara John Moore Brabazon, who was actively involved in the early Minerva company as a racecar driver and as a committee board member. The supercar is built on a carbon-fiber monocoque chassis and features a carbon-Kevlar body to help keep its weight low. On the outside, the car slightly resembles an Audi R8, but it features a prominent front fascia, LED headlights and a ventilated rear bumper that houses the dual tailpipes. The new J.M. Brabazon sits on a set of 19-inch wheels up front and 20-inch wheel on the rear. Under the hood, Minerva placed a twin-turbo V-12 engine powering the rear wheels combined with two electric motors for the front ones. Top speed is an unreal 248 mph and the drivetrain delivers a power to weight ratio of 1-to-1. No other details have been offered on the new Minerva supercar, but we do know it will be equipped with a sequential transmission, a limited slip differential and regenerative brakes.
